I would take serious consideration of what you are about to read. I know it’s easy for those who have already been hazed to put their process in the back of their head. But the conscience is a much different thing, and thoughts that enter one’s mind are sometimes uncontrolled. Greeks, I am sure of wonder why they endured the brutal hazing process.

Then there are those who are PRE-brainwashed into believing that they to must be “MADE” to be Greek. My question is, WHY. WHY does the HAZING culture still THRIVE? Once you believe you NEED to be hazed to have that connection with other members, and JUSTIFY that process, then one feels it’s a DUTY and an HONOR to bring in the next aspirants IN THE SAME WAY. Below is a fairly thorough discussion on Cognitive Dissonance (CD). I will be bringing quotes from various members of Greek Organizations to prove that this kind of foolish thinking exists among men and women ages 18 and up. Men and women who are PASTORS, TEACHERS, STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, ETC.

I am a newly initiated brother of a national fraternity and I was hazed as part of our pledging process. EVERY FACET of EVERY PLEDGE NIGHT had infinite, priceless value for me. No night was more important than the next. Each night allowed for a pledge to step forward as a leader and demonstrate that because he would do anything to BECOME a brother, he would do anything FOR a brother. I learned my strength on every level, physically, emotionally, and academically as they required me to complete my assignments and study.

I would sacrifice anything for my father. I would sacrifice anything for my mother. And now, I would sacrifice anything for my brothers and I can trust that they would pick me up from any problem I have to face. I earned their trust by completing the traditional pledging process that all brothers before me have completed.

I was never in danger, but I wanted to be. I wanted to be hazed worse. I wanted to bleed for them. I wanted to faint from exhaustion. I wanted to be branded. I wanted torture. Why?

Because I wanted to prove that God forbid, if one of my brothers needed me to risk my life to save them, I would. I would donate an organ, I would run into a burning car, I would take a bullet for them. Hazing is symbolic of that. By the end, it came naturally, as natural as love should come. And now I understand true love. I love my brothers.

Fancy rituals and elaborate texts could never, by themselves, convey love to a brotherhood. Mystery, difficulty, and mutual hatred of the process bring the pledge class together as one. We were one pledge completing the tasks together, like a battalion, like an army. An army of one. I would never deny next year’s pledges the opportunity to experience what I did. It’s hard, but it becomes the most selfless and prideful accomplishment of a brother’s life.

I abhor the efforts of your organization for your advocacy for the abolition of ALL hazing. I agree that hazing should never endanger the life of a pledge and I fully believe that recent reports of deaths have encouraged Greeks to reform the safety and traditions in their processes. Hazing as I experienced it is something I firmly support. If you don’t like it, save your talking points for your children and let Greek men and women use it as we see appropriate.

Greeks are the leaders on every campus. I personally serve on Student Government, sing in a flourishing acappella group, lead the music ministry at Catholic services, am a double major, and participate in theatre productions. We consistently demonstrate laudable academic and philanthropic accomplishments in our communities. We understand what it means to be selfless, my number one priority as a practicing Christian. We are men and women who understand the consequences of our actions. We would never endanger someone who we CHOSE as a future brother or sister. Not anymore.

Please reform your efforts to solely advocate against hazing that endangers the long-term health of pledges. Broken bones, allergic reactions, muscle pulls, joint dislocations, STDs, or death should never be the consequences of a pledging process. That is the only point on which we agree.

I am a brother. I understand self-sacrifice and why my pledge process was successful. The hazing I experienced WAS SUCCESSFUL in teaching me each facet of brotherhood. If you have never experienced it, you have no grounds to advocate against it. I’m better than you because I understand true love in the purist form. Getting initiated will be equally as important to me as getting married and having children. For the rest of my life, my brothers will look to each other for support just like we did during pledging.

    Anyone notice what’s missing here?

THERE IS NO DESCRIPTION OF WHAT HE DID…………….

  8. 2011 marks the 41st STRAIGHT YEAR someone has died as a result of GREEK ORGANIZATION RELATED PLEDGING.

1970-2011, SOMEONE’S FAMILY HAD TO BE NOTIFIED THAT THEIR SON OR DAUGHTER WAS DEAD.

You know what worries me the most? ALL OF THE UNREPORTED ACTS OF PLEDGING THAT LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY.

It’s sad but true. 2012 not only brought us another year of death, it came with MULTIPLE DEATHS,

Just sitting here thinking about why someone would go through a pledging process. The answers and observations are key to understanding the true nature of these groups. People claim they join for the most noble of reasons: community service, networking, brotherhood, sisterhood, etc.

So one must ask the question WHY? Why in the world would someone endure weeks of physical, psychological, and spiritual abuse for the above reasons? This is when you get the blank stare. Now at the interest meeting, you had all the answers, but now you have the blank stare. Greeks will tell you in the meeting that you can get all of these things outside the organization. There’s only one, two, maybe three smart answers to this. But even those don’t get to the real root of what makes these organizations so desirable.

It still leaves us to answer. Why do the majority if not ALL who are picked to join, know they are going to be beat down, decide to do it. I believe the reasons for men and women are different. For men, it’s the notoriety and the FRINGE BENEFITS…. WOMEN! For women, it’s purely a notoriety thing. Does a woman with letters appeal to men. No! It’s the same thing it’s been for thousands of years. So men and women endure the abuse for NOTORIETY.

I honestly believe that most who go into this REALLY don’t know the level of ABUSE that can be reached. But once they find out, why do they stay? Unfortunately, it’s a psychological issue called cognitive dissonance. Basically, it is any reason a person can find that overrides the physical abuse they no longer want to endure. I have actually spoken to people in these situations. It is actually rather sad. Community service, I already paid my money, I have come too far to turn back, I just got to get those letters, what will other people say about me, etc.

So this brings us to a question I have for all Greeks.

Why do you all simply pattern yourself after the membership practices of the NAACP, Urban League, etc. Fill out an application, pay your membership fee, and you’re in………

THIS WILL END THE PLEDGING PROCESS. WHY? FOR THE REASONS ABOVE FOR JOINING??????????????

The notoriety is gone and the women have no reason to be attracted to the dudes who join. Why? they are no different than the average Joe. There’s no public persona that they are super men with an elite status.
